Examples of Bad Mothers: Meet the Worst Mothers in the Bible
The Bible gives many beautiful examples of godly mothers who showed faith, courage, and love. At the same time, it also tells the stories of women whose actions brought pain, destruction, and spiritual harm to their children and others. These women serve as warnings, showing what can happen when pride, jealousy, selfish ambition, and cruelty take control of the heart. Their stories are not recorded to entertain us, but to teach us important spiritual lessons.
One of the clearest examples is Athaliah. She is remembered as one of the most wicked women in the Bible. After the death of her son, she tried to destroy the entire royal family so that she could take the throne for herself. Instead of protecting her family, she became a threat to her own descendants. Her hunger for power was stronger than natural love and responsibility. Athaliah shows how ambition without fear of God can turn a mother into a destroyer rather than a protector.
Another terrible example is Jezebel. Although the Bible focuses more on her as a queen and idol worshiper, her influence as a mother was deeply harmful. She promoted evil, encouraged idolatry, and opposed the prophets of God. Her children were raised in an atmosphere of rebellion against the Lord. A mother’s influence is powerful, and Jezebel used hers in the worst possible way. Instead of guiding the next generation toward truth, she led them further into sin.
Herodias is another woman often remembered for her evil influence. She held bitterness against John the Baptist because he spoke the truth about her sinful relationship. Rather than humbling herself, she used her daughter to carry out revenge. Herodias encouraged her daughter to ask for John the Baptist’s head. This is a shocking picture of a mother using her child as a tool for hatred and personal vengeance. A mother should teach wisdom, purity, and mercy, but Herodias planted cruelty in her daughter’s heart.
We can also think of the mother of Micah in the book of Judges. Though she may not appear as openly evil as others, she played a harmful role by supporting idolatry. When money was returned to her, she dedicated part of it to making a carved image. Instead of leading her household to worship the true God, she helped establish false worship in the home. This reminds us that bad motherhood is not only seen in violence or hatred, but also in spiritual carelessness.
These women teach us serious lessons. A mother’s role is not only to provide physical care but also to shape the heart, values, and spiritual direction of her children. When that role is misused, the damage can be deep and lasting. The Bible honestly records these failures so that people may understand the consequences of ungodly influence.
In the end, these stories are warnings to every generation. God desires mothers to be examples of faith, wisdom, love, and righteousness. The “worst mothers” in the Bible are remembered because they chose the opposite path. Their lives remind us that influence is a gift, and when it is separated from God, it can become dangerous. The lesson is clear: true motherhood should build, protect, and lead others toward the Lord, not away from Him.
